The 2014 conference at University High School in Los Angeles was kicked off with a keynote address from Jane Margolis. Twenty-six workshops and 50 workshop facilitators engaged participants in discussions of equity, justice pedagogy and practices. Featured panelists included Kyndall Brown, Frank Divinagracia, Mary Johnson, Caline Khavarani, Mary Romero and Lisa Usher-Staats

2013 Workshops
The 2013 conference at Mission High School in San Francisco was a huge success! The conference kicked off with a keynote address from Rochelle Gutiérrez entitled, Mathematics Teaching as Subversive Activity: The Role of Creative Insubordination. Over 250 educators, youth and community members attended the 2013 conference. Thirty workshops and 50 workshop facilitators engaged participants in discussions of equity, justice pedagogy and practices. Featured panelists included Jonathan Osler, Crystal Proctor, karen salazar, Patrick Camangian and Joi Spencer. Resources for teaching from the workshops can be found on the 2013 Workshops page.

2012 Conference

2012 Workshops
The 2012 conference at Mission High School in San Francisco was a huge success! The conference kicked off with a keynote address from Lisa D. Delpit, author of Other People’s Children and Multiplication is for white people. Over 300 educators, youth and community members attended the 2012 conference. The newest addition to the conference was the Complex Instruction strand, where more than 20 participants observed teachers, attended CI workshops and planned together to implement ideas in their classrooms. Thirty one workshops and 50 workshop facilitators engaged participants in discussions of equity, justice pedagogy and practices. Featured panelists included Greg Peters, Rico Gutstein, Angela Torres, Carolee Koehn, Taica Hsu and Carlos Cabana.

2010 Conference

2010 Workshops
Over 230 people participated in the third CBUW Conference in October of 2010 at Long Island University in Brooklyn. There were over 50 volunteers, presenters and facilitators from all over the country. More than 50 people participated in visits to 8 schools in New York City.

2008 Conference

2008 Workshops
Thank you to all who helped make the 2008 “Creating Balance in an
Unjust World” conference such a resounding success! Some of our
accomplishments included:

  • 72 people visited 9 schools around NYC
  • Almost 400 people attended the conference representing 26 states and 3 countries
  • Over 50 students attended the conference, including 38 who facilitated workshops, and 36% of the workshops were youth-led.

 

2007 Conference

2007 Workshops
Over 500 people participated in the 2007 conference, traveling from
more than half the states in the U.S. There were also close to 100
student participants and volunteers, a film screening of the
youth-produced film “Schooling Baltimore Street” about education
funding in Baltimore, and a 7-member youth panel that provided an
amazing start for the conference.
